The first night alone with my newborn was the most animalistic I’ve ever felt in my life. For the two nights after his birth, Elijah was kept in the nursery due to some health issues present at birth. The following night, I was allowed to have him in my room with me. And that newborn baby would not go to sleep.
Honestly, those first two nights of him being the nursery were kind of awesome. While we were concerned about the reasons he was there in the first place, it allowed us the opportunity to get some sleep ourselves. And considering my post-delivery state was kind of a mess, having those two nights to sleep without worrying about a newborn was insanely helpful.
Even though I still had trek down the hospital hall to the nursery every three hours, it was doable. So like the inexperienced new mom that I was, I sent everyone home. My husband, who wasn’t doing so well with the hospital smells and whatnot, and my parents who had just flown in.
I figured everyone may as well get some sleep, right? But then that first night came of having Elijah with me, and I really was not prepared for it. So there I was, sitting in the semi dark room with my newborn, about to lose my mind. Because that kid was not going to sleep.

Maybe I sound like a total wimp for being on the edge of my sanity when it was only the first night. And maybe I was—it is what it is. But I’m willing to bet I’m not the only new mom who felt like she was about to lose it on night one.

So often we go into motherhood with unrealistic expectations. When things go very differently than we thought, it can make everything feel far more overwhelming.
Having a realistic idea of what the newborn sleep stage will be like helps to ease the transition into motherhood.
Realistic ways to lay a good sleep foundation
While this isn’t a sleep training course, it will certainly teach you how to lay the foundation for good sleep habits for your baby. And the payoff for doing this early on is huge. I really can’t stress enough how important it is to teach your baby good sleep habits as soon as possible.
Of course, sometimes it’s hard to know how to do that. Which is where this course comes in. Andrea teaches you exactly how to lay the critical foundation and how to teach your baby to sleep well. Ultimately, this leads to more sleep for both you and baby.

While I truly think the entire course is solid gold, I wanted to hone in a bit on a few lessons that I think are the most valuable for new moms.
Newborn Sleep 101
This lesson is really the one that’s going to set your expectations up properly. In this lesson, Andrea talks about what you can expect as far as baby sleep goes during the newborn stage. As I’ve already said, having the proper perspective and expectations can make a huge difference in how the newborn stage goes for you!
I think this lesson is kind of like the “meat and bones” of the course. Definitely not a lesson you want to skip!
It also includes a section on calming your baby down. I’m pretty sure that at some point or another, every new parent has a time when they struggle to get their baby to calm down. And if your baby isn’t calm, there’s no way he’s going to sleep.
But it can be hard to know how to calm your baby down. Especially when it’s your first baby, and you’ve only been together a few days! The tips and knowledge Andrea shares about calming your baby down is gold. Just gold.
Teaching Baby To Fall Asleep On Their Own
The lesson in which Andrea teaches you how to teach your baby to fall asleep independently is the one I wish I had seen when my son was a newborn!
For a long time we just rocked Elijah to sleep. That was fine for a while, until he got a bit older and began refusing to sleep unless we rocked him.
Some nights it could take up to an hour for him to be rocked to sleep! That’s when we realized we had failed to teach him to sleep independently, setting him up for failure as he grew older.
I’m not saying you can’t rock your baby to sleep sometimes. I’m just saying that I wish we had taken the time early on to teach Elijah to fall asleep independently. It would have saved us a ton of frustration and time later on.
