Ah, the newborn stage. You’ve experienced labor and delivered your baby into the world. The hospital releases you and your little bundle only for you to get home and realize…now what? I think it’s fair to say that a majority of new moms get home only to realize that they really don’t know much when it comes to the basics of newborn care.
Even relatively simple things such as feeding your baby and diapering can feel overwhelming for new moms. Not to mention caring for the umbilical cord stump, and getting baby to sleep!
On top of the newness of it all, postpartum hormones can sometimes make it feel far more overwhelming than it may be. The first few weeks can be difficult with a newborn, for sure. But it doesn’t have to be so stressful.
Thankfully, there’s a way to get all the information you need on the basics of newborn care in one convenient place.

Online Course For Newborn Care Basics
Recently, I had the pleasure of going through the course Newborn Basics 101. Let me tell you, it is pretty thorough!
Honestly, I wish it had been around when I had Elijah. Even though I did an absurd amount of research when I was pregnant with him, I still found myself googling things after birth.
The truth is, you just don’t know what you don’t know. Even if you try to research everything, like I tried, you’re bound to miss some things.
Which is why including a newborn course in your pre-birth education is a very good idea. And if you’re going to do that, I recommend an online course. An online course will allow you to come back to it whenever you need a refresher or have questions.
Personally, I recommend Newborn Basics 101 to fill this need.
Who teaches the course?
Newborn Basics 101 is taught by Liesel Teen, who blogs over at Mommy Labor Nurse. Liesel is an actual labor and delivery nurse who decided to take her knowledge of pregnancy, birth, and babies and create content to educate new moms.
I first came across Liesel on her Instagram, which is well worth the follow. Her two birth courses, Birth It Up: The Natural Series and Birth It Up: The Epidural Series, are literal gold. If you’re looking for birth education, definitely check her out!
Recently, Liesel released her newborn course which I had the pleasure of taking. In my opinion, it is definitely a must have for new moms!
What does the course cover?
Okay, but what does the course actually cover? Is it going to be worth the investment? This course covers all the basics of newborn care, and then some. Some of the lessons include topics such as:
- Baby gear & home essentials
- Newborn characteristics & normalities
- Tummy time
- Breastfeeding
- Formula feeding
- Burps, gas, spit up, reflux, and dairy allergies
- Diapering
- Bathing & skin care
- Cord care
- Circumcision care
- Newborn sleep
- Crying, pacifiers, & colic
- Illness, fever, & colds
- Safety & shaken baby syndrome
- Car seat safety
- Postpartum basics
Is the course online?
With everything going on in the world right now, you may be wondering if you will have the opportunity to take any kind of class before your baby is born. Right now, a lot of hospitals are canceling their birth classes, and their newborn/new parent classes.
Despite the circumstances, you’re in luck. Newborn Basics 101 is a completely online course that you can access anytime, anywhere.
As a self paced course, you can go through it as quickly or slowly as you want. And since you have it for life, you can revisit any of the lessons anytime you need to.
Online courses with lifetime access are really a great investment. With lifetime access, you can use the course as a refresher not just with your first child, but with every other pregnancy and baby you have in the future.
And, bonus! This newborn care basics course is hosted on my favorite online course platform.
I’ve taken a lot of online courses, and not all online classes/platforms are created equal. Liesel’s courses are hosted on Teachable, which in my opinion is the best online course platform.
It’s extremely easy to navigate the platform and find exactly what you’re looking for. And it is easily accessible not matter what device you are using.

Is there a return policy?
If you’re anything like me, you’re probably wondering if there’s any risk to buying the course. I know for me, I’m always hesitant to put money down on something if I’m not already sure that I’ll like it and find it beneficial.
I love about all Liesel’s courses is that they have a 30-day money back guarantee.
If you don’t love the course, you can ask for a refund. Liesel is so dedicated to ensuring your complete satisfaction! Essentially, there’s no risk to trying out the course, or any of Liesel’s courses and products.
My Honest Thoughts On Newborn Basics 101 – is it the newborn care class you need?
Honestly, if you’re looking for a new parent/newborn class that you can take online at your own pace, then I really think this is the class for you. Here’s why.
Informative & thorough
Of all the online courses I’ve taken (and I’ve taken quite a few), Liesel’s courses are some of the best.
They are extremely well done and incredibly thorough. And, they are always presented in a way that’s easy to learn from and digest. Newborn Basics 101 is no exception.
In all honesty, I think you’ll learn a lot more from this course than you will from one presented at a hospital. And since it’s online, you can always come back for a refresher if you need to later.
There is so much information on newborns packed into this course that it should definitely be on your second or third trimester to do list. There’s no better way to prepare yourself for the newborn stage.
Easy for different learning types
One thing I really love about the Newborn Basics 101 course is that it set up for you to learn however you learn best. Each lesson has text with visuals for if you do better reading and seeing the information.
If you do better with audio or don’t have the time to sit and read, Liesel also recorded the course as an audiobook.
The course also includes videos if that works better for you. And if you buy now, you will have access to all future course updates as well.
Best sections of the course (in my opinion)
I went through this course and picked out the lessons that I think will be the most valuable to you. Of course, this is just my opinion, and the course covers much more than this.
But, the following are topics that I don’t think are explained well enough to new moms, which in turn leads to a rocky newborn stage. In the newborn course, the topics best covered and most needed are:
- Newborn characteristics/normalities
- Burps, Gas, Spit Up, Reflux & Dairy Allergies
- Newborn sleep
- Crying, pacifiers, colic
- Car seat safety
If you take the course, be sure to shoot me an email and let me know which lessons were the most valuable/helpful for you!
